How to use Rootsy step by step
Follow this guided flow to set up your dog, log useful information, and create a clearer handover for your Vet.
Start Here
Add your dog
Go to Dogs and create the profile first. Add the basics like breed, date of birth, weight, background, and any known health issues.
- Add one dog profile before logging anything else.
- Use the optional profile fields if they will help your Vet later.
- If the dog is adopted or some details are unknown, use the “not known” options where available.
Daily Logging
Log meals accurately
Use the Log section and choose Meals. Add ingredients in the same order they appear on the food packet, because the first ingredients are weighted more heavily in Rootsy’s analysis.
- Log each meal, treat, or food trial separately.
- Include the full ingredient list when possible.
- Save common foods so repeat logging is quicker next time.
Symptoms
Log reactions when they happen
Use the Symptoms tab inside Log to record itching, stool changes, vomiting, ear irritation, and any notes that help explain what happened.
- Log symptoms as close to the event as possible.
- Select all symptoms that apply, not just the main one.
- Use notes for severity, timing, and anything unusual that day.
Wider Context
Track environmental exposures
Use Environmental Exposures to log pollen, grass, dust, mould, cleaning products, or smoke so food reactions can be compared with non-food triggers too.
- Log likely exposures on the same day they happen.
- Use notes for walks, house cleaning, or high-pollen days.
- This helps separate food patterns from seasonal or contact triggers.
Review
Check the insights
Open Insights to review the timeline, top symptoms, and possible ingredient signals. These are pattern clues, not diagnoses.
- Use the daily timeline to compare meals, symptoms, and exposures.
- Watch for ingredients that appear repeatedly before reactions.
- Use the app as a record to support a Vet conversation, not replace one.

Export for your Vet
Use Download report to create a structured handover, or create a read-only shared link for Insights and Timeline. You can choose whether that shared view includes a small dog summary to help identify the right profile, and you can prepare a ready-to-fill email with that link on your device.
- Export after a reaction flare-up or before an appointment.
- Make sure meals, symptoms, and exposures are all logged first.
- Use the shared link if you want the Vet to open the timeline directly without owner details.
- Remember that anyone with the shared link can open it until you turn sharing off or create a new one.
- The trigger column is there to speed up review, not confirm an allergy.
How it works
How ingredient signals are calculated
Ingredient signals are a weighted pattern check, not a diagnosis. They help highlight which ingredients appear most often before symptoms.
- We only link meals to symptoms that happen 8–24 hours later.
- Each ingredient is weighted by its position on the food label (earlier = higher weight).
- Common filler terms (vitamins, minerals, additives) are ignored.
- Scores add up across linked symptoms to rank the most likely ingredients.
- Higher scores appear as Medium or High signals to help focus Vet conversations.
